Biography

Noah J. Brisson is an avid educator and performer currently pursuing a Doctorate in saxophone performance with a cognate in Jazz from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music where he is a graduate Teaching Assistant within the studio of Dale Underwood, studies jazz with Marcus Strickland. 

Noah also holds academic positions at Florida International University and Westminster Christian School. He is also a fellow of the Henry Mancini Institute at U-Miami.

Noah grew up in the very rural “Quiet Corner” of Connecticut, the Woodstock area, where he attended The Woodstock Academy for his high school years. While at The Woodstock Academy, the nurturing from his mentors would inspire his love for music would lead him on a journey to pursue it as his career. While in the early days of his musical history Noah discovered chamber music, specifically the saxophone quartet  and in 2013 he founded his high school quartet "Saxparilla” During these years Noah would studied with Ian Jackson.

Noah chose to stay local for his undergraduate degree and obtained a Bachelor of Music in saxophone performance from the University of Connecticut studying under MUC Greg Case. Within the first week of his time at UConn he was immediately drafted into the UConn Saxophone Quartet and Wind Ensemble as one of four freshman to do so. During his time at UConn, Noah made strides and looked to push the studio he was into new heights. With the assistance of Greg, Noah helped re-found a second quartet and was the Undergraduate coach for it by his senior year. While at UConn he also was able to participate in the “Pride of Connecticut” Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz 10-tet as well as participate in composer’s new works and other student projects. Noah graduated with his Bachelor of Music in May of 2020.

Once finished with his degree he moved to Miami to pursue a Master’s degree in saxophone performance at the University of Miami. With this move Noah was able to start his own saxophone studio and freelance around the Miami-Dade area.

Since relocating to Miami, Noah has been opportunities to perform with the New World Symphony, Nu Deco Ensemble, Lynn University Wind Ensemble, Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, Miami Sousa Band, Frost Symphony Orchestra, Frost Wind Ensemble, Frost Saxophone Ensemble, Frost Saxophone Quartet and most important to him the Deco Saxophone Quartet. Noah is a founding member of the Deco Saxophone Quartet, one of four winners of the inaugural 2021 Artist Launch Competition at the Frost School.

In 2022 Noah completed his Master of Music at Frost and stayed to start his Doctoral of Musical Arts as the saxophone studio's Graduate Teaching Assistant and Henry Mancini Fellow. As Noah goes into his fourth year at the Frost School of Music, he has won the Frost 2023 Concerto Competition and will perform “Rush” by Kenneth Fuchs on September 10, 2023. In addition, Noah had the honor of being the first saxophonist invited to attend Festival Napa Valley in the summer of 2023 to perform a recital for a saxophonist at the festival as well as perform with the orchestra at the festival. Another upcoming performance for Noah will be in joint performance of HMI and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at the end of September.

As an accomplished performer, Noah is also seriously invested in educating the next generation of musicians and is currently serving as the instructor of saxophone at Westminster Christian School and was recently appointed as the Lecturer of classical saxophone at Florida International University’s Wertheim School of Music. While working at these schools Noah is constantly inspired by the next generation from the fourth graders to the undergraduate seniors.

Noah brings his passion for the saxophone to the stage by performing well rounded programs with works that challenge the listener and ones that are fun or even goofy. He is a strong advocate for growing the saxophone repertoire and is constantly pursuing new music for the instrument. He also strongly believes in bringing repertoire that is relatable as well as a challenge for listeners. As of recently he has consorted with composers Alan Theisen for a new Baritone Saxophone concerto (led by Dr. Dannel Espinoza), Michael J. Melnik with new works for Saxophone Ensemble and Quartet as well as various other student composers he has had the privilege of premiering Wind Ensemble and Quartet works for. The relationships Noah has nurtured with composers has focused on assisting them write for the true capabilities of the instrument and of course to keep them writing for the saxophone quartet and ensemble genres.

Outside of music Noah has received numerous certifications in the field of assisting those with special needs; more specifically he has specialized in working with those who are Traumatic Brain Injury survivors and the amazing people on the Autism Spectrum such as his brother at The Supported Living Group. This is something Noah has done since he was young and has done so professionally for close to a decade.

In his free time, Noah enjoys cooking New England classic cuisine, spending time with his wife and their two cats, playing board games with his sax-o-friends, traveling when he can, and jet skiing at Lake Char­gogg­a­gogg­man­chaugg­a­gogg­chau­bun­a­gung­a­maugg with his dad.
